    I don’t really think “not a politician” should be a selling point for a candidate. The job is politician. I want to elect someone who understands that job and is good at it and also is not a dirtbag. We have seen how catastrophic it is to make “not a politician” the priority over “not a dirtbag.”

    Being reasonably plugged in to the NeverTrump part of the coalition, you could watch the process by which conservative voices were one-by-one exiled, forced into retirement, or forced to reinvent themselves as Baghdad Bobs for MAGA, because those were the alternatives. So no one told them.

    One thing that I think is underappreciated in how Trump was able to capture and tame right-wing media is that MAGA steadily removed the circuits - already very weak in the Fox-News-Universe - which were supposed to warn voters about these problems before they became policy.

    'Why didn't voters know <that these policies> were bad?' Because if your news was Fox News, no one told you. If your news was the WSJ, the op-ed pages assured you the worst version of this wasn't going to happen. Because MAGA spent 8 years crushing anyone who would say otherwise.
