    Mach tuck is a well documented aeronautical phenomenon going back to WW2. It has claimed many lives. If that turns out to be the case (we may never know), then it's possible that a qualified pilot in a well-maintained aircraft would have ended up in the same situation.

    My educated guess would be that the plane experienced Mach tuck, and the resulting excess forces on the horizontal stabilizer caused it to fail, which would have prevented any hope of recovery.

    The forces on control surfaces of a plane can be much stronger than you think. In 2001, American Airlines flight 587 crashed with 265 souls aboard because the first officer used excessive control input to the vertical stabilizer, essentially kicking it back and forth, causing it to break off.

    The solution is often to nose down further, which will relieve the aerodynamic stress on the control surface, and then allow you to pull up out of the resulting dive, losing a lot of altitude in the process.
