Not to say they're right or that authors should expect that kind of cruel mockery, but having trawled through the comments to get a better grasp of where people are coming from, consent seems absurd to them because they see the internet as a content sharing platform as a whole.

It was genuinely very jarring to see. Though I do get why people feel that way, if you consider they don't see fic as an interactive thing. This is just content to be consumed and so the idea that they need consent to pass it around the same way they pass around memes and art around.

Seeing readers mocking authors for asking consent before re-uploading their work on other websites is heartbreaking and demoralizing. Like I thought we were all in agreement that consent and boundary respecting was important, why are both of those things being thrown out for fic authors.

So you can understand the bewilderment and a little sadness in seeing the shift towards competing about numbers and policing what other writers do, and then having readers be super toxic and rude because they don't see you as a person, they see you as a less cooperative chatgpt.

Like, I write fic because it was festering in my head, but I posted it publicly like an old lady going ps ps ps and see who wants to chat about it. Literally all my internet friendships have been built by talking about fic with people. It's a deeply social activity to me.
