I worry that many of these fellows will filter into local police departments, although perhaps not - my understanding is that the reason a lot of these thugs work for DHS is that they couldn't get hired by a local police department.

but the whole goddamn premise of trek--yes, including TOS--is that with science, reason, teamwork, faith, honesty, openness--all those old-fashioned liberal virtues--you can overcome these horrifying obstacles, overcome violence, overcome war and destructions

the thing i come back to, over and over--which stuff like LOWER DECKS got, and so much other latter-day trek has forgotten--is that the whole idea of trek is that they exist in a genuinely horrifying universe, but *choose* to pursue peace and diplomacy anyways... and it works.
