Plus: We review, but authors get the reviews only months later, when most have already submitted to journals.

💯 I've had ICA reviews that fundamentally improved papers before journal submission, but that's rare. What's the expected workflow? Finish in Nov, wait to Jan for reviews, submit to a journal in Feb, present at ICA, then get journal reviews? Preprints completely changed the role of conferences.

Yes, I'm sure. It does create some form of 'seasonality' to the research cycle but I think this should prompt consideration of what the conference is for, what presentation/discussion formats best serve that, and what submission formats also serve that. Agree - very little time for discussion.

I think there never was any thinking regarding an underlying or prototypical workflow … also, at the conference papers are mostly only „presented“ but not really „discussed“ (comments are explicitly not welcome). The talks are more about sharing than improving research.

Extended abstracts? Different submission limits? I'm not sure what the solution is. But perhaps a bigger question is what a conference is actually for. Evaluating research? Sharing findings and getting feedback? Exchanging ideas? Networking? What format best serves those purposes?
