ao3 has protection against basic data scraping which is used to train AI, taking works offsite exposes them to that risk also, a lot of these fics may have been only accessible for registered users on ao3 and sharing it is going against the author's express wish that the work only be read on ao3

Just spent an hour arguing with folks in my local ao3 discord who all thought it was okay to mass upload fics that weren't theirs to shared drives, even when the author specifically said not to do that, & then got mad when I said this was entitled behavior!! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!😫#ao3

It's currently the same in every fandom space, be it discord or reddit. As soon as authors chime in, the get dogpiled.

seeing everyone go berserk wanting to keep being able to read things while I'm going "oh they put a backup up but I want to be able to comment so I'll just wait" is more than slightly irksome
