You certainly don't need my permission but it's granted anyway. Libraries are a public good and a boon for communities, and they buy books from authors so you can read them. Sure, buy my books if you can, but never feel bad about getting them from a library under any circumstance. They are awesome.

Hi John. Appreciate the thought but as @legalminimum.bsky.social said in response to the thread, as someone who literally *was* Disney et al (general counsel at Pokemon, Bungie, etc), it's commercialization, not registration, that would be likely to trigger a meaningful legal response

Is it common to make fanfic with other people's characters? Yes, demonstrably. Will a US court protect the fanfic author from the copyright holder? Almost always no. Is it a good business decision for copyright holders to beat up fanfic authors? Almost always no. this is our balance of forces

a) I love fanfic and the people who make it. b) There's no reading of US copyright law that allows reuse of other people's in-copyright characters in extended universe stories. Fair Use doesn't. c) Fanfic operates largely on goodwill. Suggesting otherwise doesn't help the fanfic folks.
