A very well-preserved skeleton of Castoroides’s Miocene ancestor, Dipoides, is described in a 2016 paper with very similar tail anatomy, said to indicate a “flattened tail that is half as broad as that of extant Castor”

Me and several online friends went back and forth on how to reconstruct the tail of Castoroides, as it isn’t quite like the tail of Castor. Compared to a Platypus, a living Beaver, and a Giant Otter, the gently tapering vertebrae of Castoroides seem to hint at a flattened-yet-long-and-thin tail.
