I really hope they eventually understand. I didn't go non-contact out of hate, or spite, or anything like that. I went non-contact out of self-preservation, because dealing with abusive parents completely destabilizes me emotionally, and thus professionally.

i stopped talking to my dad for a few years. not only was it necessary for my own mental health, but when i was finally ready to try again, i was pleasantly surprised to find that he'd worked on some of his own stuff in the meantime, so we have a functional relationship again

I'm the only liberal in a family of right-wing religious conservatives. I haven't seen them since my grandmother's funeral in 2009. My mother passed a couple years ago - didn't go to the funeral. I've just had enough. If you can't understand, I don't care. They didn't like me anyway. I'm better off.

It’s absolutely this. Somewhere along the way they got convinced that being a parent to adult children is the only relationship that involves no work or reciprocity. Incorrect!
