Today I think of my terrified grandmother who lived in Treharris. A year earlier, at age 14, she lost her mother to cancer and left school to take care of her siblings. Her father and brother walked to Aberfan to dig the children out. She was terrified that her father was going to die.

The gibbet mound (originally a bronze age burial mound) at Pen Dylife. In 1938 locals dug up a skull in a gibbet cage here (now in the National Museum of Wales). The remains are believed to be Sion y Gof who murdered his wife & children at Dylife after an affair. Sion was hanged here in April 1720.
