As an aside (this whole thread is an aside) this is a reason people look back fondly on early Twitter as it had an incredible level of the "noise that turns out to be signal" - actually interesting information you didn't think you wanted to know. (Now of course the secret third thing is racism)
Show PostAny media platform for a given user is going to be a mix of signal and noise but also a Secret Third Thing, stuff that seems like noise but turns out to be signal. Too much noise and you drop the platform. But no noise kills off the third thing too
Show PostMy hypothesis is that people are generally more predictable than they themselves would like to be, but less predictable than businesses would like them to be, and a lot of modern business is about building guiderails to increase that predictability ("personalisation" a big part of this)
