A spectacular buff-tip moth caterpillar feeding on a young oak sapling. When land is released from excessive grazing pressure, not just the trees and plants are able to return, but all the associated life too. A whole *ecosystem*.
Show PostAs awful as dumping rubbish in national parks and other wild places is, it's essential to be aware that overgrazing is infinitely more damaging to nature in these places. The rubbish looks terrible, but it doesn't relentlessly kill off entire ecosystems the way too much grazing does.
Show PostDeep in the woods, the underside of a fallen tree's rootplate reveals charcoal, previously about 2 foot (61cm) under the ground surface. My guess is these partially burned wood fragments could easily be 1,000s of years old, given their depth, and immunity to rot. Fires the imagination... 🔥
