"Pitching is ahead of the hitting. Hitters just suck now." Of course pitching is ahead of hitting. It always is! Pitchers literally begin play and dictate action. They have a monopoly over the baseball. Pitchers act; batters react.

So many of the environment trends throughout baseball history are directly tied to its pitchers. (The steroid era offense was just as much about expansion thinning out the herd of pitchers as it was McGwire and Sosa sticking needles in their ass.) Hitting-centric eras are a rarity, not the norm.

I don't know if it's the influence of the steroid era, or the fact that scoring runs appeals to the crowd more than preventing them, or the fact that hitters are out there every day and pitchers are not. Idk. Whatever it is, that concept is wrong. Hitters do not dictate action, pitchers do.

Folks who claim that hitters are just as responsible for all of the above as pitchers are tend to operate on what I think is just a misunderstanding of how baseball works: the idea that hitters, not pitchers are the ones who dictate the way a ballgame unfolds.

I think a lot of baseball fans and even media have a fundamentally incorrect concept about how the sport actually works in-game. And you can tell when the conversation becomes about the low batting averages / how good pitching is now / lack of offense / strikeouts etc.
