Excellent essay, this, and super thorough. 54 years ago, the first essay topic I was set in Cambridge Oriental Studies was "The value of writing Chinese history by dynasties" (RIP Joseph McDermott). Got no memory of my answer but I'm sure what I wrote was mostly a) banal b) wrong
Show PostImplausible as it sounds, this major Chinese intellectual was in 1974 giving the jieshao to a group of foreign students touring the Minzu xueyuan (I know this, because I was one of them)
