People are so monomaniacally focused on the need to blame evil tech oligarchs that they literally cannot understand or accept what happened, since it would suggest OpenAI was less than 100% malicious.

The problem is that there’s an implicit claim that you have a clear definition of “thinking”. You don’t. You’re just trying to declare a word off limits because you don’t like the vibes.

They can't quite say they'd rather hear soothing lies, but it's evident many would. And then there's a larger group of people who are being very severely misled, on a topic of rapidly growing importance.

The goal isn't context or precision. It's that strong AI critics find evidence of genuine AI capability deeply threatening (even when presented negatively) and are constantly trying to find ways to downplay those capabilities.
