I wanted to compare en-dashes too - in a slightly more linguistic way, which is to look at how common they are per 1.000 tokens. As tokens I count words and (strings of) punctuation marks. It's pretty damning in terms of the increase. And actually pretty wild - <und> is only 'round 24 tokens/1000.
