It needs to embrace the weirdness sincerely and completely, with zero hesitation or reluctance. And there's just not much cyberpunk that does, especially after 9/11.

An annoying thing about the whole cyberpunk genre is that no one, at all, has been able to get fully weird with it since PKD. It's a genre where you really, really need to get weird, the proof is: imagine trying to explain the current news to yourself 20 years ago.
