Respectfully Peter, the essay was pretty awful including no analysis of differences in policing between countries, accounting for geography, and etc. But don’t take my word for it. Take John Pfaff’s word for it. He is a law professor who specializes in criminal justice and law and economics.

I read about half of it. He lost me in seamlessly gliding from the quasi-social workers that Europeans have for police to the quasi-commandos that we have.

Um. Police are never the key institution determining quality of life in any neighborhood anywhere. There’s no evidence to support the assertion of your Oak Park city council member, though I’m sure the response time stat was correct it wasn’t anything like causal.
