To be clear, we've *always* subsidized farming in this country. We encouraged farmers into monolithic growing practices, then propped them up when that started failing en masse nearly a century ago. Then we had to find creative ways to get rid of it all: ethanol, corn syrup, soy-everything.

First impose a tariff that injures the farmer, then tax the public to compensate him, and finally demand his gratitude. Thus does government manufacture both the wound and the bandage, while congratulating itself upon the cure.
