#OTD 1486 Maximilian of Habsburg elected as King of the Romans, the preliminary step to becoming Holy Roman Emperor. The office of emperor was elective but from this time became hereditary in the Habsburg family, although there was one last open election on Maximilian’s death. bit.ly/1q0trDB
