obviously that's big, not bit. As recently as the 1990s it was very expensive to make an international phone call, and the cost of airfare was higher relative to incomes. Even if you wanted to keep in touch with distant family it was objectively harder. Ease of phone/video makes "cut off" visible.

Ironic, maybe hilarious, in long-term perspective when you consider that until maybe 50-60 years ago it was quite common to move to the other side of the country (in bit countries like the US) or world, and with the technology and prices of the time have infrequent contact with your family.
