My best tip is do the hard yards: visit the regional archive/historical site, track down the original everyone quotes but no one reads, pin down the timeline properly. Really engage with the sources and you'll find not what you expect, but something.

Writing as a historian of material culture who is also a curator, my research tips are: (1) nontextual artifacts are evidence; (2) museums and historical societies have material culture and often the associated archival material; and (3) wherever you research, bring a sweater and wash your hands.
