obviously c&h is undeniable. i just think it is worthwhile drawing attention to the fact he had won the jack-pot when he said no to merchandising or adaptation. i have spent most of my life judging folks for doing the opposite, when honestly i am not sure i would be able to materially say no!
Show Posti am grateful to live in a world without Calvin & Hobbes’ faces being plastered on shitty merchandise, but watterson also lived in a bygone era where there was the slimmest insitutional chance of a cartoonist making enough (or more than enough!) just from a comic strip.
Show Posti guess i am thinking about this because i like to imagine someone knocking on my door and handing me a comically large cheque in order to adapt Blind Alley. Not because I want that to happen, but because I want the benefits that wealth provide (free time to make the shit i want to make)
Show Postfind myself thinking often about the laudable fact of Watterson never exploiting Calving & Hobbes, while imagining how wholly different his decisions probably would be had he been working in a different context (ie. today).
Show PostI often think it’s just as laudable that he refused to adjust his Sunday format to suit the requests of national papers who wanted a more modular layout. And wonder what he’d have done in the age of IG and social media.
