Context and character are why I think Rule 34 has such a huge impact. It's not that canon designs are always hotter, it's that you already have context for that character. You know their personality, their desires and relations. You have a foundation on which to build intriguing levels of horniness.

There's a rule I learned early on, that story and visuals cover for each other. Great visuals means people won't care as much about a boring plot. Conversely, great dialog and character can make up for lackluster visuals. So someone with art like mine can't really get away with bad pornstar plots.
