As a retired therapist I never cease to be amazed at how often people will conjure up a demon, transfer it onto a convenient other, and then try to get into a debate over something they completely imagined. I wouldn’t call it a pathology, but it’s certainly pathological.

I’ve seen this pattern many times. You write a nuanced thread about a complex issue. The first responses are thoughtful and interesting. Then someone on another forum extracts a sentence and deliberately misinterprets it. Then your timeline is flooded by trolls all saying exactly the same thing.
