The Times has boxed itself into a corner. It doesn't want to appear partisan, but it's impossible to report fully on what Trump is doing without pointing out that he is implementing an authoritarian takeover and that he lies constantly. So the Times shades the truth to appear nonpartisan.

The venerable New York Times not only determines what’s news but sets the standard for how it should be reported. It has been describing the midterms as if it were a competition between two equally passionate and roughly equivalent sides. This is a mistake.
