There was no "descent into authoritarianism in Russia". There was simply 500 years of various flavors of authoritarianism in Russia (with occasional civil wars of one authoritarians versus other authoritarians, no side ever fought for liberty).

Yes, you keep repeating that fantasy. There are simply no symptoms of "democratic transition" in 1990-1991. Nobody wanted democracy - neither Yeltsin nor the communist-dominated parliament (let alone Gorbachev or Pugo). The democracy did not "fail", it was never tried.
