Mamdani didn’t turn out to be the radical Marxist revolutionary some built him up to be. That’s okay. Much to the disappointment of the far left and far right, he’s a city mayor fixing potholes, not the next leader of an intifada or the Sendero Luminoso.

People watching the student protests in France and fixating on the rioting instead of asking why the protests are happening are like gnats mesmerised by a light bulb. The students’ core demands are incredibly basic. That’s what should be amplified, addressed and resolved.
