The problem is that when Washington privatized the state wanted to maintain the same kind of revenue they had been getting from running their own stores, so the taxes at retail and at the distributor level are bananas.

In DC and Maryland, the excise tax on distilled spirits is only $1.50/gallon. Which is only one of the reasons why so many who live in Virginia shop here.
