So I think of it more of an "attack till you break and enter turn based" or a convenience to speed up the encounters if you are overpowered.

I think the switch is basically there because it can get tedious to always enter turn based combat, especially for small enemies. The original game had turn based only, but if you replay the story you kind of want to slash through the low levels or run past the enemies xD
