1990(this way I don't have to update because I'll forget). Utterly disappointed American. Missing our allies and a more stable dollar. I make art sometimes but never post it. I play TTRPGs and sometimes talk about it. I have a dog and cats

In most but not ALL bat species, the nipples are in the armpit, as in this hammer-headed bat (Hypsignathus monstrosus). This position allows nursing babies to cling to momma while she flies, without hampering movement. (📷: Smithsonian)
Show PostHere's a rare Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus) demonstrating how this works in practice. Even when not actively feeding, the baby may use the axillary mammary tissue as an additional attachment point for stability during flying.
Show PostThere's a structure called a "mammary ridge" that forms early in development & dictates where nipples CAN form. On the chest in primates, the inguinal (loin) area in ruminants, but notice the circles "above" the human norm: those are the axillary nodes that develop into nipples in bats.
