Yes people wield social capital in this way. Social groups adhering to particular ethical codes of conduct also wield collective refusal and joint preference for association in this way. My point was "gatekeeping" is ethically speaking not the relevant component of this, the power structure is.

This is the most fundamental fact about advocating for marginalized people that everyone gets wrong. You have to be willing to exclude the people and viewpoints intent on dehumanizing you. Making every "inclusive" space a battleground undermines its own goals.
