At about 5.30pm another U-boat, UC.79, fired a torpedo which was intended to finish off the Polvena, but it missed and hit the Ruby squarely amidships instead. The trawler immediately broke up and sank. She carried a crew of 18 men: there were no survivors. #RoyalNavy #WW1 #NavalHistory

17 Oct 1917 // HM Trawler Ruby, a Hull boat in naval service as a minesweeper, was one of two trawlers standing by the torpedoed merchant ship Polvena off Ushant, awaiting a salvage tug. The Polvena had been torpedoed by U.53 that morning but had remained afloat.
