Because simply sitting in that environment is like the auditory assault of an airplane full of newborn babies all screaming. When you get off that flight, are you going to be rested or are you going to crumble into a puddle when the screaming stops? Simply being in the room takes 2-3x the energy.

This is so underrated. I can usually act totally normal, but I'm not. Pretending to fit in isn't fitting in. Simply going to a noisy restaurant requires recovery time that I do in private where nobody sees. None of the rest of these ppl have to recuperate from eating out. We're not the same.

Some late-diagnosed individuals continue masking because they've been doing it so long. Or continue to mask bc otherwise they'd have to learn how to be someone they aren't used to being whether its the 'real' them or only shades of. (took me 16 yrs 😏)
