There's a micro-level grief: the games taught me a lot about myself, reflecting parts of myself back at me that I didn't think games ever would. Dragon Age: Origins gave me Zevran. Then, Anders. Then the masterpiece of Dorian. Stuff like that opened my eyes to being able to be a part of all this.

When I became a writer, I dreamed one day that I would get to take a shot at writing a Dragon Age. It was like my dream goal. Along the way, I somehow stumbled into being allowed to make Star Wars. Which is... still unbelievable. Yet I still held BioWare on a pedestal above it all. Sucks, man.

On a macro-level, the grief is yet-another reminder that although those special kinds of games won't die entirely, and that creative people will keep making meaningful things, the industry that allowed such things to flourish frequently no longer exists. The industry I joined is so very changed.
