I wouldn’t go as far as to say ‘ineligible’. Like most things, there are exceptions. But as I often say, I think the best way is to learn the ‘rules’, work to them, then when you know them really well, you can choose to break them with a strong defence of why it was worth it!

I put it this way clever or funny doesn’t have to be blue. Those are the way to go I think but that’s hard because not easy to write a joke much less write it in cryptic form.

As for introducing people to cryptics, I guess this is where things like MC (for all its faults) have a very real place. A 15x15 grid with a block of what superficially appears to be gibberish, is pretty intimidating for the uninitiated solver, however good they might be at general puzzling!
