State DOTs control most of the deadliest city streets (including this one in Memphis), but they won’t fix them bc they don’t want to constrain speed or vehicle throughput. The funding issue is bogus IMO. State DOTs always find $$ for favored roadway expansions. Urban safety just isn’t a priority.
Show PostI wrote this Vox article explaining why state roads are such intractable obstacles for urban street safety. TL;DR: State DOTs refuse to fix urban roads, and also won't transfer control. IMO Congress should create a generous matching grant program to entice state DOTs and local gov's to make a deal.
