@amyjanebeer.bsky.socialToday about 100 people took part in a mass trespass in the Prime Minister’s constituency. There’s a right to roam over just 1% of Makerfield, & today the landowner proved our point for us: putting up fencing & calling the police. @andyburnham.bsky.social - please open the door to the countryside!
Show PostMakerfield is about 40% Green Belt land, but very little of it is accessible to the thousands of people who live next door to it. We trespassed in the Winstanley Estste, which spans hundreds of acres, but where there’s no right to roam & virtually no public footpaths. @righttoroam.bsky.social
Show PostWe picked up litter as we walked, learned about fungi, and observed the invasive Himalayan balsam and rhododendron that the estate has allowed to infest the streams and woods. Apparently, these activities warranted a police presence. We just want the public to be welcome in their countryside.
Show PostGreater Manchester has a proud tradition of pioneering access to land, from Wigan’s Gerrard Winstanley to the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass We hope that @andyburnham.bsky.social takes inspiration from this to give Makerfield residents & wider public a right to responsibly access England’s countryside.
Show PostI’m just a person on my fucking knees begging the government to use its absolutely massive majority to do something extremely fucking popular: save our democracy.
