One day I'll try a modern Boehm flute and see how I get on, but this guy has the same note layout as the tin whistle I messed with as a kid, and sounds right for folky stuff.

There are probably more sensible ways of doing it than this 19th century English simple system flute that would have been about the cheapest one available at the time, but it has a vibe.
