oh this is a fun one. In England at one point they passed a law around bread that was incredibly strict where the weight of bread you sold was the imperative so bakers started adding a 13th piece to make sure they didn't end up underweight and in the dock

even in the "Vowels" appendix there is only passing acknowledgement that there may have been [e] as a "shading" (=allophone?) but no remark on this ubiquitous preposition
