Some of those programs also help fund sexual abuse education in schools. There is an article in the Kansas City Star (2024) about lack of oversight, and funding associated with audits which was concerning. And possibly inequitable enforcement for black people.
Show PostProsecutor Melesa Johnson ran on the idea that it needed to have better oversight. Since she was elected, she has hired a new executive director and more transparency about the use of the funds. Overall, a small tax with, hopefully, increasing benefit. Sorry I lost the links jumping around apps.
Show PostOof I had stuff typed up and a refresh from Bluesky dropped it… I don’t live in Jackson County so take this for what you will. There’s an NPR article (recent) basically stating there’s not really any opposition to it, which says a lot imo. It also does go to fund local programs.
