Show PostDuring powerful earthquakes, liquefaction can happen at large and devastating scale. When the ground behaves like a liquid, buildings can tilt and sink into the earth, pipes can float to the surface, etc. Here, I test it with my own feet and, unsurprisingly, I quickly sink into the sand.
Show PostWhile standing along the Rio Grande, I was able to record a liquefaction demo! By simply tapping the sand, it progressively became more liquid-like. Liquefaction occurs when loose, water-saturated sand/soil loses its strength/stiffness during vibrations, causing it to behave like a liquid.
