My sons both played ball hockey, which is what hockey families do in the off-season. Helmets, gloves, pads, full intensity. I was a volunteer defensive coach. I remember the team coach telling is own son, 12, in tears, to run off a twisted ankle. Horrible culture, but my sons wanted to do it.
