and- crucially!- they understand that part of not recreating that is their behavior. when i see anecdotes of "my child cut me off for a silly reason!", it's easy to see that those folks aren't willing to take that step.

I find it so telling that the mother in the last screenshot characterizes this as "punishment" instead of a natural consequence of the volatile environment she admits she created. She calls it shameful and embarrassing, not heartbreak. Punishment, not her children protecting themselves.
