If Laughton lived longer I bet he would've put Mitchum in some Brecht. That's what THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER is, the best Western example of what Brecht taught. Mitchum was most of the way there. His famous note to himself - NAR, 'no acting required.' A great film actor knows when to do nothing. But -

Watch Mitchum talk about Laughton sometime. The rare time the facade breaks. He LOVED Laughton, respected him as much as anyone in the world. CL nervously confessed to Mitchum he was gay. Mitchum replied, YOU DON’T SAY! They giggled like schoolboys & never spoke of it again..

Saw this at The Egyptian on a 90 year old nitrate print. It was wild to see something so literally physically old that still felt so modern
