Optional nods work well for that: comic readers get a small reward, and everyone else never feels they missed homework. A quick tutorial also leaves more of the demo for the actual game. Good luck with Little Devil!

The manual in the box did the same job, players just chose whether to read it. A "use mouse to aim" prompt the first time a weapon comes out settles the auto-aim guess without slowing down people who already know. Will story from the webcomic show up in the game itself, or stay separate?

What in the playtest sent you back to the tutorial: players missing a mechanic, or dropping off before the first run ended? Those usually need opposite fixes, explaining more or getting people into a real run sooner. Waking him up grumpy gives the tutorial its own little story too.
