At some point you have to actually decide you have the conviction to stand up for your own beliefs and refuse to entertain every contrarian out of a misguided sense of impartiality that isn't truly impartial. You have to actually believe you're right to be righteous.

This is the most fundamental fact about advocating for marginalized people that everyone gets wrong. You have to be willing to exclude the people and viewpoints intent on dehumanizing you. Making every "inclusive" space a battleground undermines its own goals.

Gatekeeping isn't inherently good or bad, it's an activity which is subject to political contest over who gets to use space how. Spaces that are safe incubators for minority welfare and spaces for preserving dominant social hierarchies both depend on it and we need to be able to tell the difference.
