Not to bring all of this back to the demise of alt weeklies, but I do think that the fact that there's less places than ever to find out about new books is certainly part of the problem.
Show PostPublishers do less publicity than ever* and authors have had to find unconventional ways to get people's attention and now those unconventional ways don't work, either. *Publishers that are not DC Comics, who did a ton of promotion for GALAXY: THE PRETTIEST STAR, which I am eternally grateful for.
Show PostI just read about an author who spent over $40,000 to promote her book for negligible results and again I am reminded what an utter miracle it is that anybody buys my books at all.
