The American Top 40 count down in 1979 is why alternative was born. Almost unlistenable. Blondie, Talking Heads, Cure, Joy Division, Gary Numan, Jam, Squeeze, Pretenders, Buzzcocks, Split Enz, Clash, Specials, English Beat, channels that welcomed Bowie, Roxy Music, Kinks-- were Necessary.
