Yeah, even in my extremely white family, we refer to my father's cousins (so the children of my great aunts) as 'aunts.' It's generational signifier: kin of your parent's generation are aunts and uncles. I'd introduce my little one to my own cousins as 'Uncle [firstname]' and 'Aunt [firstname].'
